English saddles are used for riding horses in the English Riding Style. These saddles are small, and unlike the Western Saddle they do not have a horn. Their design was meant to allow the horse freedom of movement while jumping or running. When placing the saddle on the horse, it should be positioned behind the shoulder blade so that the rider’s weight is distributed over the horses ribs. Even an English saddle that is properly sized will cause the horse discomfort if misplaced.
